A Prediction Market Trader Earned $Nearly Half a Million from Wagers on Venezuela's Political Shift.

A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader just before it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be removed from office by the end of January surged in the hours before Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform recently and placed four wagers, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that users estimated the likelihood of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had climbed to 11% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other traders also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Emerges

Elected officials are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation introduced on recently seeks to ban public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to politics.

Prediction markets were examined under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is illegal in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
